The Ultimate Stress Relief Toolkit for Winter & Election Season 🌬️

Hello friend!

As winter settles in and the world outside feels colder and, let’s face it, a bit heavier, it’s the perfect time to pause and ask: How is stress showing up for me? Whether it’s from the holiday rush, darker days, or the constant hum of election season, stress has a way of seeping into our lives – and it rarely does us any favors. In fact, there isn’t a single health issue that improves with added stress.

But what if this winter could be different? What if, instead of just getting through, you could find a sense of calm and resilience that carries you forward? Below is a toolkit I’ve put together – a few simple, powerful practices to help you keep stress at bay and embrace the season with a bit more ease.

Ready to feel a little lighter? Let’s dive in. 🌿

The ultimate stress relief toolkit for winter & election season

Here are some practical, effective strategies to help you navigate this season with grace and ease. Think of this as your personal stress-relief toolkit, carefully curated to support you through winter's chill and election's fervor. Let's begin our journey to a more balanced you!

1. Start Your Day with a Deep Breath

You don’t need a meditation app or even a lot of time. Just a few moments to breathe deeply – really deeply. Breathe in for a count of four, hold for a second, and exhale slowly for six counts. That’s it. It’s an easy way to bring a little peace into your morning and keep you steady through whatever the day holds.

2. Try Acupressure for Instant Calm

You don’t need needles to benefit from acupuncture – a little acupressure goes a long way! Here are some points to try when things feel overwhelming:

  • Yintang: Between your eyebrows. Gently press for an instant feeling of calm.
  • Shenmen: On the upper part of your ear. A minute here can help soothe your whole nervous system.
  • Pericardium 6: On the inner forearm, three finger widths from the wrist. This point eases anxiety and chest tension.

Just take a minute with each point and notice how your body responds. Sometimes the simplest tools are the most effective.

3. Embrace Gentle Movement

Winter isn’t the season to go all out with intense workouts. Instead, try gentle forms of movement like Restorative Yoga, Qigong, or even a slow walk. These practices help smooth out energy flow, calm the mind, and release tension in a way that doesn’t deplete your body’s reserves.

4. Warm, Nourishing Foods for Winter

Think about grounding, warming foods – soups, stews, root vegetables, and soothing herbal teas. Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds are wonderful, too, as they can ease tension and help you feel more at ease.

5. Set Boundaries with Screens

News, social media, notifications – it can be too much, especially during an election cycle. Try limiting the time you spend scrolling, especially first thing in the morning or right before bed. A little space from screens can go a long way in keeping your mind calm and balanced.

6. Take Time to Reflect

In a busy, stressful season, it’s easy to lose touch with your inner voice. Journaling can be a great way to re-center. It doesn’t have to be fancy; just jotting down a few thoughts, feelings, or even small things you’re grateful for can help bring a sense of clarity and peace.

7. Consider Acupuncture

If you’re looking for extra support, acupuncture might be just what you need. By targeting specific points, we can calm the nervous system, support better sleep, and melt away emotional tension. It’s one of the best ways I know to reset and find a little sanctuary from the stress around us.

Moving Through the Season with Intention

Winter asks us to slow down and listen, to lean into simplicity and nourishment. Take these practices as an invitation to stay grounded and open to calm, even when the world around us feels loud and uncertain. You have these tools within you – to respond, to soothe, to bring back balance.

Wishing you peace and resilience as we move through this season together.

With warmth,
Dr. Catherine

🌱 How acupuncture can help your gut feel great again

Let’s talk about something we all deal with but often don’t talk about: digestion. From bloating and indigestion to more chronic digestive issues, gut health is key to feeling energized, clear-minded, and truly well. But did you know acupuncture could be a powerful ally in supporting your digestion?

In Chinese medicine, digestive health is all about balance. When energy (or Qi) is flowing smoothly through the digestive system, we feel light, comfortable, and full of vitality.

But when that balance is disrupted, discomfort can show up in many ways: bloating, gas, fatigue, and even stress. Acupuncture offers a natural way to restore this harmony, calming inflammation, boosting digestive function, and reducing stress – all of which can improve gut health over time.

Here’s How Acupuncture Can Help:

  • Eases Bloating & Indigestion: Specific points help release trapped gas and reduce the “heavy” feeling after meals.
  • Reduces Stress: Stress and digestion are closely connected. Acupuncture relaxes the nervous system, helping the gut work more effectively.
  • Promotes Regularity: By stimulating the body’s natural rhythm, acupuncture can support healthy bowel movements.

If your gut has been feeling “off,” consider acupuncture as a gentle, effective way to get things back on track. You deserve to feel good from the inside out!

Here’s to a happier, healthier gut 🌱

The Body Pod – Creatine for women over 40

I’ve been diving into a really interesting podcast lately, and it’s about a supplement I never thought I’d be considering: creatine. Yep, that same one I always associated with high school boys trying to bulk up! But it turns out there’s a lot more to creatine than I expected, especially for women over 40 who want to keep their muscles and bones strong.

So here’s the backstory: I was looking to seriously kick butt at the gym – working hard, lifting, building strength. But then I took a much-needed break and was shocked to see how much muscle I’d lost. Let’s just say the 25% drop I noticed may be a slight exaggeration, but honestly? At 50, I didn’t realize just how fast muscle could vanish. Keeping it has become its own workout!

Here’s why this matters to me. I have big goals: climbing Kilimanjaro, trekking the Great Wall of China, maybe even that pilgrimage in Galicia, Spain (okay, I’m Jewish, but hey, why not!). Then there’s the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina, and I can’t forget scuba diving in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Look that one up – the dream is real, friends!

For all of this, I need to pack on lean muscle and strengthen my “bird-like” frame. Plus, I’d like my bones to stay solid and not look like Swiss cheese ready to crumble like a Cheese-It. So, back to the gym I went, lifting as heavy as I can and focusing on form over reps.

That’s where this podcast caught my interest. It’s about creatine – not just for teenagers, but for people like us who want to support muscle integrity, bone health, and even brain function. Turns out, creatine is a powerful tool for anyone dealing with stress, sleep deprivation, or looking to stay strong as we get older. And yes, I was sold – I shipped some off to my 17-year-old son too.

If you’re curious about creatine’s benefits, this episode is worth a listen. And of course, if you’re on any medications, be sure to chat with your doctor before trying anything new.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! 🎧💪
