The Surprising Truth About Body Fat (And Why It Matters)

Hello, my friend!

As I sit here sipping my tea on this cold winter day in New England, I can't help but marvel at how our understanding of the human body keeps evolving. Today, I want to share something fascinating that's changing how we think about body fat - especially for women navigating perimenopause and menopause.

πŸ‘‡ In today’s email:

  • This week's inspiration: The Revolutionary Science of Brown Fat
  • Latest blog post: Welcoming the Year of the Wood Snake
  • What I'm excited to read: The Five Types of Wealth by Sahil Bloom

The Surprising Truth About Your Body Fat

Did you know that not all body fat is created equal? Scientists have discovered something incredible about fat that’s completely changing our understanding of body composition and metabolism.

There are actually two distinct types of fat in your body: white fat and brown fat. While white fat stores excess energy (hello, muffin top!), brown fat is more like a metabolic powerhouse. It’s actually closer to an organ than traditional fat tissue, and here’s the exciting part - it helps burn calories!

Why This Matters for Women’s Health:

  • During perimenopause and menopause, our bodies tend to store more white fat
  • Brown fat activity can help regulate metabolism during hormonal transitions
  • Specific lifestyle choices can help activate and even create more brown fat

The Really Good News: Research shows we can actually help convert white fat to brown fat through some surprising methods:

  • Cold exposure (hello, cold showers!)
  • Certain foods like broccoli contain compounds that may aid this conversion
  • Regular movement, especially in cooler temperatures

Remember: Your body is incredibly wise. This isn’t about fighting against it, but rather working with its natural intelligence to support optimal health.

FYI- I'm working on more research and a blog post on this topic. Stay tuned...

What I'm excited to read

The Five Types of Wealth

"The Five Types of Wealth" by Sahil Bloom comes out Feb 4th, but I had the opportunity to read early chapters and listen to an interview with the author. It really grabbed my attention, especially his insights on social wealth. In my practice, I often see how community or the lack thereof impacts health, particularly during major life transitions. This book beautifully explains why investing in relationships is just as crucial as maintaining physical health and exercising financial discipline.

A key takeaway: Just as we compound financial wealth through consistent investment, we can compound social wealth through regular connection and community building. It's never too late to start investing in your relationships!

Here's a link to order the book!

Stay curious and remember - yes, you can understand and work with your body's wisdom!
