A weekly love letter for women in the middle of everything.

The matriarch of all emotions

Hello, my friend!

Last night I found myself up at 2 AM with a stunning awareness of joy blooming in my heart—open almost like a big pink lotus flower. This doesn't happen often. Something inside me opened in the most joyous way possible, my heart expanding beyond what I thought it could hold.

I heard someone say once that joy is the matriarch of all emotions—that you have to let all the other hard things in first to experience that pure elation. This profound truth has been unfolding in my life lately, and I can't help but share this revelation with you.

👇 In today's email:

  • This week's inspiration: The matriarch of all emotions
  • Latest blog post: Facial Rejuvenation Without Toxins
  • What I'm listening to: Finding Faith in Our Future (Krista Tippett)

The Matriarch of All Emotions

Joy is so elusive. Impossible to pursue, impossible to manufacture. But when it descends upon you, it opens up places in your body and heart that feel like soothing rain after a long drought.

This awareness has been particularly profound as my oldest biological child turns 20, and as my youngest, who plays basketball at an elite level in Atlanta, Georgia, achieves the recognition his decade of dedication deserves. Watching his skill level flourish after years of commitment has been extraordinary.

The Physiology of Joy

From a Chinese medicine perspective, joy resides in the heart—our emperor organ that governs all other systems. When we experience true joy, we're not just having an emotional moment; we're creating a cascade of healing throughout our entire being. Joy literally opens the heart meridian, allowing energy to flow freely and nourishing every cell in our body.

Why We Must Feel It All

The beautiful paradox is that to experience the depths of joy, we must first allow ourselves to feel everything else. The disappointments, the grief, the uncertainty—all of it creates the capacity for joy to take root. It's like preparing soil for the most magnificent garden; the richness comes from composting all of life's experiences.

Capturing Lightning in a Bottle

There's such gratitude in just being able to be here to witness these moments. I want to capture this feeling of joy—almost like putting summer lightning bugs in a bottle, or harnessing the bounty of summer's harvest to keep it available for harder times ahead.

But perhaps that's the thing about joy: like a bolt of lightning, it cannot be harnessed. It has to be experienced fully in the moment it touches down with us. And we should relish every opportunity to welcome it.

Remember, dear friend: Yes, you can create space in your life for joy to flourish. Sometimes it means slowing down enough to notice it when it arrives.

What I'm Listening To

Finding Faith in Our Future - Krista Tippett on Pulling the Thread with Elise Loehnen

I used to listen to Krista Tippett's podcast "On Being" years ago and found her exploration and reflection on what it means to be human so thought-provoking. This interview on Elise Loehnen's podcast "Pulling the Thread" was beautiful and inspiring.

I'm a person who finds it easy to be optimistic when I stay in my own bubble, focused on individuals, my family, and my little world—but that optimism becomes challenging with broader global topics. Krista's perspective on finding faith in our collective future, even amid uncertainty, resonates deeply with my belief in the power of individual transformation to create ripple effects.

What struck me most was her discussion of how we can hold both grief and hope simultaneously—much like how joy requires us to feel all emotions fully. She talks about the importance of "becoming ancestors our descendants will thank us for," which beautifully captures the responsibility we have to tend not just our own wellness, but the wellness of future generations.

This conversation reminded me that our individual healing journeys—whether through acupuncture, mindful living, or simply choosing joy when it arrives—are part of something much larger. When we heal ourselves, we contribute to healing the world.

I think you'll find this conversation as nourishing as I did.

Wishing you moments of unexpected joy this week. Try to pause and receive them fully when they arrive.

Yes, you can embrace the full spectrum of emotions and discover the beauty waiting on the other side!
