The Gentle Art of Resetting When Everything Feels Off

Hello, my friend!

As I write this, I'm reminded of a slightly unusual ritual I began recently - walking with my eyes closed on the quiet back roads of rural Tiverton. With each careful step, I tune into the sounds around me - an owl hooting, the texture of concrete beneath my feet, the warmth of sunlight on my face. My failed seeing-eye dog Gracie accompanies me, though I'm not entirely convinced she'd keep me from walking into a tree!

This practice helps regulate my nervous system through heightened sensory awareness. After about 20 steps, I open my eyes, take a breath, and try a few more. What I've noticed is fascinating - when I return home after this practice, my appetite is robust and I feel strangely relaxed and settled, even after days when my nervous system felt completely overwhelmed.

How to Reset When Things Are Really Bad

When life feels overwhelming, our nervous system often takes the biggest hit. This delicate system manages everything from how we respond to stress to our ability to rest and digest. But it can easily become dysregulated from chronic stress, trauma, lifestyle factors, or even environmental influences.

The nervous system isn't just about mental health - it's deeply connected to women's physical wellbeing too. In fact, our hormonal balance is intricately linked to how well our nervous system functions, which is why perimenopause and menopause symptoms can feel so all-encompassing.

So how do we reset when everything feels off? Here are three gentle approaches:

1. Start with physical anchoring: Sometimes the simplest practices help most. Try my walking meditation (with eyes open if you prefer!), focusing on the sensations beneath your feet. This grounds you in the present moment and activates the vagus nerve, which helps switch your system from "fight-or-flight" to "rest-and-digest" mode.

2. Prioritize the body's foundation: Before any complex detox or wellness program, focus on colon health and digestion. As I've shared before, if this pathway is congested, other detox efforts are like cleaning your house while the garbage is still inside! Start with warm lemon water in the mornings and prioritize fiber-rich foods.

3. Honor your need for rest: Your nervous system needs downtime to heal. Rather than pushing through fatigue, create small pockets of genuine rest throughout your day - even 3-5 minutes of deep breathing or closing your eyes can make a difference in how your body processes stress.

Remember, recognizing when your system needs a reset is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. Your body is constantly communicating with you - learning to listen is the first step in true healing.

Yes, you can find your way back to balance, even when things feel truly overwhelming!

Why I Love Microcurrent (And You Might Too)

When I have a few precious moments to myself, one of my favorite self-care rituals involves my microcurrent facial device. This little machine, which I surreptitiously brought back from Europe, has become something of a lifesaver for my "jowly jawline," pulling the flesh closer to my cheekbones.

Though the effects aren't permanent, the psychological lift is real - when I look in the mirror after a treatment, I look more effervescent, more alive. And surprisingly, the process itself is deeply relaxing, not at all as shocking as it sounds!

In my latest blog post, I dive deeper into the science behind microcurrent technology and why it's become such a staple in my personal routine and practice. Here are the highlights:

Microcurrent therapy uses low-level electrical currents that mimic the body's natural electrical signals, stimulating cellular activity and providing numerous benefits for facial skin. These gentle currents boost the production of ATP (cellular energy), which supports collagen and elastin production - the proteins responsible for keeping our skin firm and elastic.

Beyond the physical benefits of improved circulation, reduced puffiness, and a more lifted appearance, I find the ritualistic nature of microcurrent treatments to be a powerful way to connect with myself. It's those 15-20 minutes of focused self-care that remind me I'm worth the investment of time and attention.

Whether you choose a professional treatment or an at-home device, the key is consistency. Just like any wellness practice, the magic happens when we make it part of our regular routine.

What I'm Reading

Should I Do Botox? It's Probably Too Late

I recently came across a thought-provoking article by Jo Ellison in the Financial Times titled "Should I Do Botox? It's Probably Too Late" that had me nodding along between sips of my morning latte.

Ellison explores the journey from Botox being taboo to mainstream, noting that over 9 million treatments were performed in the U.S. alone last year. She writes about feeling out of step with younger generations who start preventative treatments in their 20s, aiming for that "newborn-like skin" while she's been conflicted about her choices.

This piece resonated deeply with me as I wrestle with similar questions about aging authentically while working in an industry where appearance matters. I've never been a Botox enthusiast, but I understand the temptation when life's challenges start etching themselves onto our faces.

What I appreciate most about Ellison's perspective is her acknowledgment of the double standards in the beauty industry and the impossibility of eternal youth, while still being honest about the allure of small enhancements.

As I reflect on this, I also think about what messages I'm sending to my 20-year-old daughter about beauty and self-worth. How do we balance self-acceptance with the desire to look our best? For me, the answer involves coastal walks with my black Lab, connecting with nature, and remembering that our value extends far beyond our appearance.

I’m cheering for you. Have a wonderful week!
