The First Steps of Detoxing for Spring 💦⛈🌨🌸

Hello, my friend!

As I watch the first signs of spring emerge outside my window, I can't help but feel that familiar urge to refresh and renew. Just as nature begins its annual revival, our bodies crave the same cleansing reset after the heaviness of winter.

Many of us think of detoxing as simply cutting out sugar or alcohol, but there's a more holistic approach that honors your body's natural wisdom. Today, I'm sharing the crucial first step that most people miss when embarking on a spring cleanse—one that will make all the difference in how you feel.

First Steps of Detoxing for Spring

When we talk about detoxing, most people immediately think about eliminating certain foods or starting a juice cleanse. But here's what I've learned after 20 years in practice: if you want to truly detox, you need to start with the basics—your colon health.

Why Your Colon Comes First

Our large intestine is our most important detox organ. Think of it as the final gateway for toxins leaving your body. If this pathway is congested, any other detox efforts are like cleaning your house while the garbage is still inside—not very effective!

When you begin detoxing without addressing colon health first, you're essentially releasing toxins into an already burdened system. The result? You'll likely feel worse, not better.

The Foundation of Effective Detox

Before reaching for supplements or drastically changing your diet, focus on these essentials:

  1. Prioritize fiber: A high-fiber diet not only balances hormones but adds bulk to your stool, promoting daily, complete bowel movements. This is your body's natural detox system working as designed.
  2. Warm hydration: Start your morning with warm lemon water, and stick to warm or hot beverages throughout the day. Cold drinks can slow down digestive processes.
  3. Consistency matters: Aim for regular, complete bowel movements where you feel a sense of emptiness afterward—not like there are "rocks" still in your abdomen.

When you master this foundation, you'll notice immediate benefits: better sleep, improved digestion, and yes—your pants will fit better!

In coming newsletters, I'll guide you through the next steps of spring detoxing. But remember, just like tending a garden, renewal starts with preparing the soil. Give your digestive system this loving attention first, and watch how you flourish.

Yes, you can transform your health through these simple yet powerful practices!

The Holistic Approach to Protein: Options for Women that Aren't Meat

Protein isn't just about building muscle—it's the foundation of our entire body's structure, from our skin to our hormones. For women navigating perimenopause and menopause, getting enough high-quality protein becomes increasingly crucial for maintaining vitality and addressing common concerns like thinning hair, brittle nails, and muscle loss.

In my latest blog post, I dive deep into the world of protein beyond meat, exploring how diverse protein sources can support your specific needs during this transitional time:

The Beauty Connection
Did you know that your hair and nails are direct indicators of your protein status? When protein intake is inadequate, your body prioritizes essential functions, often sacrificing hair and nail quality. I share specific plant-based proteins that contain the sulfur compounds and amino acids that specifically support keratin production for stronger, more vibrant hair and nails.

Hormonal Harmony
I explore how certain plant proteins contain phytoestrogens that can gently support hormonal balance during perimenopause, potentially easing symptoms like hot flashes and mood fluctuations without the concerns some women have about meat hormones.

Absorption Matters
Traditional wisdom from various cultures has always understood that how we prepare proteins is just as important as which ones we choose. I share ancient techniques from Chinese medicine for maximizing protein bioavailability through proper preparation and food combining.

Practical Solutions
The post includes a weeklong meal plan featuring delicious, diverse protein options including:

  • Traditional fermented soy preparations that enhance nutrient absorption
  • Ancient grain and legume combinations that create complete amino acid profiles
  • Sea vegetables rich in minerals that support protein utilization
  • Seed cycling protocols tailored to perimenopausal hormone patterns

Whether you're vegetarian, flexitarian, or simply looking to diversify your protein sources, this guide offers a refreshing perspective aligned with both Eastern and Western nutritional wisdom. It's time to move beyond the "chicken breast and protein shake" mentality toward a more nuanced understanding of how protein works in women's bodies.

Remember, adequate protein is your secret weapon against the visible signs of aging, and Yes, you can get everything you need without relying heavily on meat!

What I'm Listening To

Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky

For women of our generation, Monica Lewinsky's name evokes immediate memories—not all of them compassionate. As someone who was working in media when the scandal broke in 1998 (I was on the overnight shift at Fox News as one of their first employees), I remember the constant coverage of the Starr Report and how a young woman's reputation was dragged through the mud.

In our post-#MeToo era, I've been reflecting on how our culture treated her—a young woman in no position of power whose narrative was stolen and replaced with callous jokes and political agendas. It makes me feel shameful about how we all responded then, but luckily, times have changed.

I've discovered her new podcast, "Reclaiming," and it's lovely—deep, self-reflective, and Monica herself is super smart and charming. What draws me to this podcast is its exploration of what it means to reclaim your narrative. As Lewinsky says, "I would define reclaiming as to take back what was yours, something you possess is lost or stolen, and ultimately you triumph in finding it again."

Each episode features conversations with both recognizable and unrecognizable names about navigating roads to triumph. It's exactly the kind of content that helps you "fill your tank up"—perhaps you laugh a little, connect with the people she's talking to, and leave with nuggets that help you feel more hopeful.
