The Gentle Art of Resetting When Everything Feels Off
I'm reminded of a slightly unusual ritual I began recently - walking with my eyes closed on the quiet back roads of rural Tiverton. With each careful step, I tune into the sounds around me - an owl hooting, the texture of concrete beneath my feet, the warmth of sunlight on my face. My failed seeing-eye dog Gracie accompanies me, though I'm not entirely convinced she'd keep me from walking into a tree!
This practice helps regulate my nervous system through heightened sensory awareness. After about 20 steps, I open my eyes, take a breath, and try a few more. What I've noticed is fascinating - when I return home after this practice, my appetite is robust and I feel strangely relaxed and settled, even after days when my nervous system felt completely overwhelmed.
